Pekutherm is planning to expand its operations to Italy, Spain, France, and the Baltic states.
The Germany-based PMMA mechanical recycler is already present in Denmark and Finland and wants to double its recycling volume to 10,000 tonnes/year by 2027.
PMMA, also known as acrylic glass, has excellent optical and physical properties. It is used for glazing applications in, for example, caravans, facades, furniture, and vehicle taillights, but is also found in flat screens, neon signs, jewellery and more. Around 300,000 tonnes of PMMA are produced in Europe alone each year of which just 10% cent is being collected for recycling.

Germany’s greenhouse gas emissions and energy transition targets - Germany aims to reach neutrality by 2045.
This factsheet provides an overview of Germany's greenhouse gas emissions and the government's energy transition targets. [UPDATES to include final update of Germany's NECP in August 2024]
Germany aims to reach net greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045. It has set interim targets of cutting emissions by at least 65 percent by 2030 and 88 percent by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. Post-2050, Germany aims for net-negative emissions.
Germany is one of almost 30 countries to have enshrined the goal of climate neutrality by or before 2050 in its national law. The European Union decided to add the 2050 target to its 2021 climate law, and an additional 50 other nations worldwide have committed to achieving net-zero emissions by at least 2050 in policy documents.

LyondellBasell to acquire plastics recycler APK
LyondellBasell (LYB) announced it has entered into an agreement to fully acquire Germany-based plastics recycler APK.
APK entered insolvency self-administration procedures in May 2024 and has since been looking for new investors.
LYB first invested in APK in February 2023, alongside Kirkbi, the family-owned holding and investment company of the Lego brand. At the time, the two companies helped raise €130 million to build a large-scale Newcycling plant in Merseburg, Germany. Other investors included German venture capital firms MIG Capital, AT Newtec, and Salvia.
LYB said in a statement that APK’s solvent-based plastic recycling technology is a ‘perfect fit’ for its mechanical and chemical recycling technologies. APK's patented technology allows plastic waste, such as multi-layer packaging materials, to be processed into high-quality LDPE recyclates.
LYB plans to sell products manufactured using Newcycling technology under its Circulen portfolio of sustainable polymers.
