New PLA venture aims to kindle bioplastics industry in MENA region

Why PLA Plastic Is Not A Sustainable Choice? Should Or Should Not Use? – EQUO
SS Royal Kit Emirates Investment and Global Biopolymers Industries have partnered to form a new company called Emirates Biotech, headquartered in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. The initiative will focus on the production and marketing of PLA biopolymers across the Middle East, Africa, and India.
Emirates Biotech, which has emerged from the former Gulf Biopolyers Industries, plans to build a PLA production facility in the United Arab Emirates. The facility will be located in Abu Dhabi’s KEZAD Free Zone

Commercial operations are due to start in early 2025; construction of the company’s first PLA production plant will commence before 2026.
PLA is a highly sustainable biopolymer that is 100% renewable, 100% biodegradable, and 100% recyclable. It is manufactured from lactic acid, which is produced through the fermentation of plant biomass with a high starch content. The production is carbon neutral. PLA is extensively used in Europe, UK, and USA.
The material is suitable for conventional plastic processing technologies, including injection moulding. It can be used across multiple sectors and industries, offering a sustainable and circular solution to replace traditional fossil fuel-based plastics and helping to accelerate the transition to a circular, biobased society.

Ban on single-use plastic bags came into force in Dubai

Single-use plastics bags are the first affected by the ban, effective as of Jan. 1, 2024.
Non-plastic single-use products, including single-use bags, are banned from June 1, 2024.
Starting from Jan. 1, 2025, single-use plastic products, including items such as plastic stirrers, table covers, cups, styrofoam food containers, plastic straws, and plastic cotton swabs, will all be covered by the ban.
From Jan. 1, 2026, the ban will extend to other single-use plastic products including plastic plates, plastic food containers, plastic tableware, and beverage cups and their plastic lids.
The new regulation has the ultimate goal of protecting the environment, encouraging people to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle, and promoting the culture of using reusable products to advance sustainable development and circular economy, according to SDGs.
